about

terminal one (evoke the forms)

evoke the forms is a set of solo acoustic saxophone recordings made at STEIM (the Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music) in Amsterdam in 2009. Prior to my 2014 album Ceremonies Out of the Air, I projected & recorded two earlier solo saxophone albums that I did not release: a live recording made in Kraków in 2001, & the present one. I am precious about my work, to a fault perhaps, & have held back much of it for reasons I don’t always understand later. Releasing this set is a gesture toward course correction.

But it is something else too. The title of this recording is taken from the same passage in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road from which I derived the title of my 2014 album. The whole passage is “Evoke the forms. Where you’ve nothing else construct ceremonies out of the air and breathe upon them.” The book, about a man and his son navigating their way on foot through a post-apocalyptic hellscape that feels more plausible every day, has taken on a heightened significance for me as a father the past six years. But I had already appended this title—evoke the forms—to the session immediately after recording it twelve years ago. Listening back, these ceremonies are entirely mournful to me. Though my playing has changed, the plaintive nature of this music feels like what today feels like — which is wild, given the profound losses—personal & collective—of the 12 years since this session. I had no idea. Or perhaps I did. These are the forms I was moved to evoke, after all.

So these pieces were already elegies for cataclysms to come. They also comprise an elegy for STEIM (1969-2020), which blessed our vital & fragile scene with an exemplary way of nurturing creativity & community for fifty years. My love & gratitude to Takuro Mizuta Lippit, Vivian Wenli Lin, Nico Bes, Joel Ryan, Michel Waisvisz (RIP), & everyone else who supported my artistic development at STEIM during those years in the 2000’s.
